Sewing with Confidence: Embracing the Journey and Breaking the Rules of Traditional Techniques

Audio Version Here:

Is there a right way to sew? A lot of beginners will feel intimidated when learning how to sew, because they believe there is a "right way to sew;" they gather books, take classes, watch YouTube videos, etc. And sometimes the information can be so overwhelming that it’s very difficult to know where to begin. I tell beginners that you don’t need to know everything to begin. Start with a pattern that is appropriate for your skill level, and the only thing you need to know about sewing are the steps within that pattern. It is more important to practice and develop muscle memory. It is important to analyze any mistakes. just like athletes, everyone develops their own unique technique. Yes, there are fundamentals that are universal, like the creation of certain stitches, but sewing is a unique and individual learning journey. You will gather more and more technical skills with each project that you accomplish. Being intimidated with a wealth of information can be crippling. The sound of "couture sewing" sounds intimidating. To me, couture sewing just means freedom: freedom from the machine, freedom from rigid rules, and the freedom to experiment.

I taught myself how to sew through sewing patterns, and through experimentation. While I have purchased sewing books and some online classes, I didn't find them to really be a resource or applicable to my projects. I found out that some sewing instructors really didn’t have true haute couture techniques used in couture houses.

These patterns were the foundation for my sewing education, which has led to more and more couture experience. I still do not know the full universe of sewing, and may never will, for it is an endless, lifelong quest. So wherever you are in your sewing journey, you are in the right place. Tackle your projects with confidence, and limit your efforts to what’s right in front of you. You'll be surprised how much you'll grow. Happy Sewing!
